   Geriatric Psychiatry

The Geriatric Psychiatry in-patient unit at
Park Plaza Hospital is a nine-bed
advanced facility devoted exclusively to the
coordinated treatment of mental problems in
the elderly.

Modalities
The modalities offered include pharma-cotherapy,
occupational therapy, group psychotherapy, and
family therapy. Our skilled team of
professionals offers medical management,
psychological evaluation, and physical therapy.
The program provides the emotional and medical
support to promote quality living.

Consultations
Consultations from all medical specialties and
subspecialties are readily available since the
program is located within a general hospital.

Warning Signs of Mental Health Problems
These changes may be overlooked simply because
they may be viewed as typical aging symptoms.
Stress may become too severe for the older person
to manage and can manifest as changes in behavior
that may include:

  • Sleeping less than 5 hours or greater than 9
    hours nightly
  • Poor appetite
  • Crying spells
  • Not deriving enjoyment from daily activities
  • Hopelessness
  • No energy
  • Deteriorating hygiene
  • Isolation
  • Talking less
  • Increased nervousness
  • Agitation
  • Lack of activity
  • Expressing suicidal thoughts or verbalization
