National, Five-Year Study Names Park Plaza Hospital Houston’s Only
100 Top Most Improved Hospital™

HOUSTON- Park Plaza Hospital is the only Texas hospital named one of the nation’s 100 Top Most Improved Hospitals™, according to the recently released findings of Solucient’s five-year study of performance improvement.

Park Plaza Hospital and other leaders in performance improvement "are very dependable hospitals in terms of their commitment to improvement. They have improved simultaneously across patient care, financial performance and operational efficiency," said Jean Chenoweth, Solucient’s executive director. "They have reduced mortality faster, reduced complications faster, cut expenses faster, and cut length of stay faster. They are increasing their value to their communities at a faster rate than other organizations."

Solucient, an Evanston, Ill.-based health care information company, produces clinical research studies to improve clinical quality and delivery of care while providing education to the health care community. The company also produces the "100 Top Hospitals" list, which it has been publishing for 10 years.

Lex Guinn, President & Chief Executive Officer of Park Plaza Hospital said that being "the only hospital in Houston and in Texas to receive this distinction was the icing on the cake. We did not apply, nor did we pay a fee for this honor. Our results spoke for themselves and I certainly cannot disagree with their choice. Our place on Solucient’s inaugural list of top 100 most-improved hospitals exemplifies our consistent attention to and improvement in patient care and service."

Solucient carried out the five-year, performance improvement study of 2,866 hospitals without notifying hospitals that were evaluated. To perform the study, Solucient grouped hospitals into five categories and then compared hospitals within each category. Those categories are: major teaching hospitals with 400 or more beds and significant teaching involvement; teaching hospitals with 200 to 399 beds; large community hospitals with 250 or more beds; medium community hospitals with 100 to 249 beds; and small community hospitals with 25 to 99 beds. To select hospitals for its inaugural list of 100 improved performers, Solucient analyzed Medicare cost reports and Medicare Provider Analysis and Review, or MedPAR data.

In the category of large community hospitals, Park Plaza Hospital was one of 20 recognized, the only Houston hospital, the only hospital in the state of Texas included in the Top 100.

"What makes this honor even more gratifying is having Solucient honor us for doing what we do every day," said Guinn. "They’ve been watching us perform for the past five years and were impressed enough to add us to their list."

With the purpose of identifying hospital management teams that have led their organizations to achieve the fastest rate of consistent annual organizational improvement, Solucient ranked hospitals on eight measures of clinical and financial performance. On all measures, overall performance at hospitals that made the list improved at a faster rate than peer facilities. For example, the hospitals on Solucient’s "Most-Improved" list posted the following results:

· Saw average length of stay drop more than one-fifth of a day per year

· Saw expenses per adjusted discharge drop an average of $40

· Saw their mortality index decrease an average of 0.07 index points per year

· Saw their complication index decrease an average of 0.05 points each year

According to Solucient, Park Plaza Hospital is an organization that has instilled a culture that can lead to setting national benchmarks. Since 1975, Park Plaza Hospital has been a major provider of health care services to their community. With more than 500 physicians that have staff privileges and more than 1,000 hospital employees, their health care professionals are there to meet needs in an variety of medical and surgical specialties, including treatment of diabetes, cancer and other diseases, as well as orthopedics, cardiology and maternity care. Their skilled nursing services, rehabilitation programs, outpatient services and outreach programs promote a continuum of care for patients and their families.

This award comes on the heels of Park Plaza Hospital receiving Tenet HealthCare’s Circle of Excellence Award in 2003 for its patient satisfaction, employee and physician satisfaction with the hospital.
